Thursday, January 24, 2013 - Home inventory List

Consider setting aside some time this winter - or this month even - to do up a home inventory list. It may seem tedious, but the time and effort are worth it. If you ever have to make an insurance claim, a record of the damaged items will make the process much easier for you.

1.Create a spreadsheet or use one of many software packages on the market to make the job easier.

2.Inventory one room at a time. Remember to include the stuff in your basement, attic, garage and outdoor shed. List every item, its price and the date purchased. Include the brand, model numbers and serial numbers for items that have them, along with the replacement cost (cost to replace the item today).

3.Be meticulous. Everything counts, from small pieces of jewelry to large pieces of furniture, electronics and everything in between.

4.For a visual record, photograph or video tape your stuff.

When you’re done, make copies of your inventory documents, photos and video and keep them in a safe place outside your home, such as at a friend’s place or in a safety deposit box. Keep your own copy and update your inventory at least once a year. If you fancy yourself an art aficionado, jewelry collector or curator of any type of valuable merchandise, ask your insurance agent about insuring those items separately on your policy to increase your protection.
